Today, R&E activities are becoming increasingly internationalized, and global international cooperation penetrates into most areas of fundamental and applied knowledge.
Scientists, teachers and students are united in mobile teams for the effective implementation of joint projects. Sciense and education are no longer limited to the classroom and research laboratory: participants need constant and ubiquitous access to the Internet, to the required resources and services to be able to work where it is needed at the moment.
National Research and Education Networks (NREN) around the world are taking responsibility for creating these conditions for representatives of the highly mobile sphere of education and science.
Solving the problem of providing guests of the organization – conference participants, invited teachers, foreign students with safe, confidential and ubiquitous Internet access through a local Wi-Fi service may require the involvement of significant administrative and technical resources. The necessary functionality for transparent use of the roaming service in wireless Wi-Fi networks for the scientific and educational community is implemented in the framework of eduroam (education roaming) international project.
Students, teachers and researchers get free access to the Internet and resources of R&E networks in research and educational organizations in Russia and abroad, on the campuses of eduroam project participants. Protected user access to the service from personal portable and mobile devices is based on their own credentials (using a single login and password) issued by the “home” organization.
The eduroam service currently operates in more than 100 countries around the world, supporting processes of scientific cooperation, educational mobility and the exchange of thousands of scientific and educational organizations. Deploying a service on an organization’s campus is not only a matter of prestige, but also a contribution to the growth of rating indicators.
